1. Gabriel García Márquez
Gabriel García Márquez was a Colombian author and journalist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982.
He is best known for his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, which has been translated into dozens of languages.
García Márquez’s work often deals with themes of family, love, and loss, and he is considered one of the most important Latin American authors of all time.
2. Isabel Allende
Isabel Allende is a Chilean author famous for her magical realist novels. Her best-known work is The House of the Spirits, which was published in 1982 and became an international bestseller.
Allende’s novels are often set in Chile and explore the themes of politics, history, and family. She has been awarded numerous prizes for her writing, including the prestigious National Book Award.
3. Junot Díaz
Junot Díaz is a Dominican-American author who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2008 for his novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
Diaz’s work often explores the immigrant experience in America. He has also won numerous awards for his short stories and essays.
4. Sandra Cisneros
Sandra Cisneros is a Chicana author and artist famous for her poetry and novels. She is best known for her novel The House of Mango Street, which tells the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago.
Cisneros has been awarded numerous prizes for her writing. She is also a noted visual artist, and her artwork has been exhibited around the world.
5. Julia Alvarez
Julia Alvarez is a Dominican-American author and poet. She is famous for her novel In the Time of the Butterflies, which tells the story of three sisters who fight against the dictatorship in the Dominican Republic.
Alvarez has also written poetry, children’s books, and non-fiction. She has received many prizes for her writing, including the National Medal of Arts from President Obama.

6. Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo was a famous Mexican painter who is best known for her self-portraits. She was born in Mexico City in 1907, and she suffered from polio as a child which left her with a permanent limp.
Kahlo was involved in a serious bus accident that left her with numerous injuries including a broken spinal column. While she was recovering from her injuries, Kahlo began to paint and she soon developed a unique style that captured the pain and suffering she experienced as a result of her accident.
Kahlo’s paintings depicted traditional Mexican culture, along with her own personal experiences of pain and suffering. Kahlo’s work has been praised for its unique perspective and strong emotional impact.
She received international recognition during her lifetime and her work continues to be celebrated today.
7. Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera was a famous Mexican painter best known for his large-scale murals. He was born in 1886 and began studying art at a young age.
In 1909, he moved to Paris to study painting. and it was there that he met famous artists like Pablo Picasso and other popular modern painters.
Rivera returned to Mexico in 1921, after meeting with David Alfaro Siqueiros. The two shared a vision to create a new kind of art inspired by the Mexican Revolution. Rivera painted many large-scale murals throughout Mexico and the US.
His work dealt with political and social themes, which offended some. However, his art is still revered today for its political intensity and emotional impact.
8. Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso was a famous Spanish painter. He was born in 1881 in Málaga, Spain. His father was also an artist and Picasso’s first teacher.
By the time he was 13, Picasso’s abilities had already surpassed his father’s. In 1904, Picasso moved to Paris to open his own studio.
Picasso soon developed a unique style and became the co-creator of Cubism, along with his friend Georges Braque. His paintings are known around the world. He created over 50,000 pieces of art.
In addition to painting Picasso also did ceramics, sculpture, and collage.
9. Salvador Dalí
Salvador Dalí was born in 1904 in Figueres, Spain. He studied art in Barcelona and Madrid. In the 1920’s he began to use hallucinogens to conjure up images from his subconscious mind as inspiration for his work.
From 1929-1937 he continued to create art with this method and became the most well-known Surrealist artist.
10. Diego Velázquez
Diego Velázquez was born in Seville, Spain in 1599. At only 11 he began an apprenticeship with Francisco Pacheco, Seville’s best artist at the time. However, his abilities quickly surpassed his master’s and he began to develop his own unique style.
Velazquez was best known for his portraits. He was appointed court painter to King Philip IV of Spain, and he created many famous paintings including “Las Meninas” and “The Rokeby Venus”.
Velázquez is considered one of the fathers of modern painting. His work has been praised for its realism.

11. Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez is a famous American singer and actress. She was born in 1969 in the Bronx, New York to a family of Puerto Rican descent.
Lopez began her career with a small role in the movie My Little Girl in 1986and then as a dancer on the show In Living Color. She became a successful actress in the 1990s, taking on leading roles in Selena and The Wedding Planner.
In 1999, Lopez released her first album On the 6, which was a huge success and sold more than 8 million copies worldwide.
She continues acting and singing today and is one of the highest-paid Latina artists in history.
12. Shakira
Shakira was born in 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia. She began her career at a young age, performing in local talent shows. She got her first record deal in 1990. In 1991, she released her first album and continued to gain in popularity.
In 2001, she released her first English-language album Laundry Service, which made her a worldwide success. She has won several Grammys for her work.
Today she continues to sing and use her influence to raise awareness and funds for children displaced by violence in Colombia.
13. Celia Cruz
Celia Cruz was born in 1925 in Cuba. In the 1940s, she won a singing contest, called “La Hora del Té” (Tea Time). After the contest, her mother encouraged her to pursue singing while her father wanted her to have a career in teaching instead. While studying music, one of her professors encouraged her to pursue singing as a career. In 1948 she recorded her first songs.
In the 1950s when she began singing with the Cuban orchestra, Sonora Matancera. In the 1960s, she joined the Tito Puente Orchestra and her popularity boomed.
Cruz became famous for her amazing vocals, flamboyant style, and enthralling performances. She released over 75 albums in her career and won many awards for her talent, including several Grammys.
Celia died in 2003 but is remembered as one of the most beloved musicians of the 20th century.
14. Gloria Estefan
Gloria Estefan was born in 1957 in Havana, Cuba. When Estefan was just a toddler, her parents fled to Miami, Florida due to Fidel Castro’s rise to power.
She began her music career in 1975 when she met her future husband, Emilio Estefan, and became the lead singer of the band Miami Sound Machine. The group achieved great success with their singles such as “Conga” and “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”. She later recorded several solo albums, gaining even greater popularity.
Estefan is famous for her resilience and positive attitude. She has won numerous awards, including The Presidential Medal of Freedom. She has also written two children’s books a cookbook, and an autobiographical musical.
15. Marc Anthony
Marc Anthony was born in 1968 in New York City to Puerto Rican parents. He began his music career as a backup vocalist for Menudo and Latin Rascals. In 1988, he released his first album called “Rebel”.
In 1992, Anthony was the opening act for Tito Puentes and reached a pivotal point in his career. He changed his style from Freestyle to Salsa, which he is known for today.
Anthony is famous for his passionate performances and powerful vocals. He has won several awards, including two Grammy Awards. He is also a successful actor, starring in ‘El Cantante’ and ‘Man on Fire’.
16. Tito Puentes
Tito Puentes was born in 1923 in Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican parents. He spent his childhood listening to Puerto Rican and Cuban music while drumming loudly enough to cause complaints from the neighbors. In the 1940s he joined the Machito Orchestra.
He was drafted into the Navy during World War II. After the war, he went to the Julliard School of Music. In 1948, he formed his own band and own unique style. He became known as “El Rey” or the king of mambo music.
He won five Grammy Awards for his music and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Puentes died in 2000 but his music lives on and continues to inspire new generations of musicians.
